Manchester United maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season after playing out a 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

There was not much in the way of early action, but one player who did show intent going forward was Mohamed Salah. Perhaps eager to prove a point to Mourinho, the Egyptian caused nightmares for the Red Devils defence with some delicious dribbling.

After going on one of his runs in the 14th minute, he set up Georginio Wijnaldum for a shot, but the Dutchman’s strike posed no problem for David de Gea, who saved comfortably.

United were generally cautious in the opening stages, but in the 30th minute, Nemanja Matić unleashed a blistering long-range strike that had Simon Mignolet beaten. However, it flew just over the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Liverpool went even closer. Roberto Firmino drilled a lovely low ball from the left into the path of Joël Matip, who smashed the ball at goal from close range. However, De Gea came to United’s rescue with a reflex save. Salah had a chance to score on the follow up, but disappointingly fired wide.

The intensity of the fixture perhaps caused a rush of blood to Romelu Lukaku’s head as he went straight through Joe Gomez with a late challenge. The striker was lucky to escape without a booking from referee Martin Atkinson.

In the 43rd minute, Lukaku drew a good save from Mignolet, firing at goal after a swiftly executed build-up.

The Belgian was at the centre of controversy again straight afterwards as his boot caught Dejan Lovren in the face. However, it appeared accidental and he was not booked.

The two sides went into the break all square at 0-0.

Liverpool had the first clear chance of the second half in the 56th minute as Joe Gomez found Emre Can with a pinpoint early cross into the box, but Can’s touch was too heavy and he missed the target from close range.

Six minutes later, Philippe Coutinho went down in the penalty area, claiming to have been fouled by Ander Herrera. Atkinson, however, was unmoved.

Liverpool continued to attack, but try as they might, they could not beat De Gea and the resolute Red Devils defence. United held on for a point in what was arguably their first big test of the Premier League season.
